To mark the opening of its new Asian Library, Leiden University celebrated Asia Year in 2017. The aim was to put Leiden more firmly on the world map as a leading knowledge hub on Asia. This formed the impetus for the Graduate School of Social and Behavioural Science to organize its first Asian PhD Workshop, held on Thursday 14 December.

Entitled “Your PhD and Beyond: Strategies for Surviving and Thriving”, the workshop was organized by Naqi, Nadia Mansouri from the POPcorner, and Carolien, and chaired by Maria Sherwood-Smith. Boya, as an alumna and postdoc, first gave a talk to share valuable tips and insights, putting herself in the shoes of the current PhD students. Three PhD students presented their research projects during the mini-symposium and exchanged thoughts on conducting cross-cultural studies between the Netherlands and Asia. The talks provoked lively and in-depth discussions among fellow PhDs from different parts of Asia. The attendees agreed that the workshop functioned well as a platform for networking and inter-collegial support, and expressed the hope to attend such an event again next year.
