The 13th Congress of the European Society of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology (ESPO) led by Luisa Monteiro and Jorge Spratley, was held in Lisbon, Portugal (18-21 June). Johan and Carolien were invited to present the latest findings in our hearing research. Carolien gave an overview of our studies on the relation between hearing loss, children’s opportunities for social learning, and their mental health.
This conference was also the unofficial kick-off of a new collaboration between Otorhinolaryngology and Developmental Psychology (Leiden University) with Guida Veiga (University of Évora), and Luisa Monteiro (Hospital Lusiadas, Lisbon), both situated in Portugal. Within this unique collaboration, our new PhD student Brenda Sousa da Silva will study social play in deaf and hard of hearing young Portuguese children.
