How to measure guilt and shame?Moral emotions, like shame and guilt, are important for children’s social functioning. Without these emotions, interpersonal aggression and bullying can reach high levels. Yet, measuring the level of shame and guilt in children is not that easy. Many self reports for young teenagers use situations that can evoke both guilt and shame, thus how to disentangle the two? Sheida and Carolien have now published a validation paper on the brief self report for shame and guilt, based on the SCEMAS that were originally designed by Ferguson and Stegge (1998).
