Having a hearing loss does not only affect one’s auditory and language ability. On 13 October, Carolien was invited to give a presentation at the conference “Social and Emotional Aspects of Hearing Loss,” organized by Prof. dr. Beverly Wright of the Knowles Hearing Center at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA.
Carolien gave an overview of the latest outcomes of how hearing loss can influence – indirectly – children and adolescents’ social and emotional development. Kathy Pichora-Fuller from University of Toronto talked about hearing loss in elder people and how this affects their social lives and wellbeing. Other speakers, such as Jill Preminger from University of Louisville and Kris English from University of Akron, all shared their findings and thoughts on the social and emotional wellbeing in hearing-impaired populations and their families.
