On October 16th to 19th, Carolien and Lyndsey Allen will present together at the 14th European Symposium on Paediatric Cochlear Implantation in Bucharest, Romania. The topic of their talk will be focused on why children with a cochlear implant need ERICA abilities, which refer to Empathy, Resilience, Imagination, Creativity, and Adaptability.

On September 18th, Bobbie van Zessen graduated cum laude for her master in Developmental Psychology. She worked with Adva on the inclusion of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children in mainstream education. Congratulations, Bobbie!

Research presentations at the European Conference on Developmental Psychology

August 30 to September 1, Adva, Boya, and Yung-Ting visited Athens, Greece, to attend the 19th European Conference on Developmental Psychology. In different symposia and paper sessions, they presented their latest research findings about children or adolescents with a hearing loss, or who have a Developmental Language Disorder. Yung-Ting presented her unique studies on children with a cochlear implant from Taiwan. Discussions focused on the fact that social participation does not come naturally when communication forms a barrier, and what impact it can have on other areas of development as well as the possible ways to cope with it.

 

Keynote talk on emotion socialization in children with CI

At the 16th Symposium on Cochlear Implants in Children in Florida on 10-13 July, Carolien gave a keynote talk on the emotional competence of children with a CI. In her presentation, Carolien stressed the fact that – in theory – children with a hearing loss and no additional disabilities could have a similar development compared to their hearing peers; yet all children need an inclusive social climate in which they are welcome and can participate to develop to their full potential. Rachel attended the Autism Europe Congress in Nice, France from the 13th – 15th of September. She presented research on expressions of empathy of autistic and non-autistic girls and boys, which suggested that these groups express empathy in different ways.

Qi Meng joins our team and receives a grant from the Chinese government

Our lab will soon welcome another new PhD student from China. Qi Meng has been granted the Chinese Government Scholarship (also known as CSC) under Boya's supervision, which will support her four-year research project at our lab. Her project will focus on the social and emotional development of Chinese children with hearing loss.

Who are we?

Our team is located at the department of Developmental Psychology of Leiden University in the Netherlands. We work in close collaboration with the Dutch Foundation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Child (NSDSK), the ENT department of the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), the Centre for Autism, the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), TU Delft, and University of Twente. Our group is dedicated to examining the emotional development of children and adolescents of all walks of life. We have a strong focus on the functionality of emotions, and its impact on children's social development. Besides typically developing children and adolescents, we are interested in the development of those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, with autism spectrum disorders, or with specific language impairments.
